Welcoming Congregation
A Welcoming Congregation is a congregation that has taken steps to become more inclusive of
people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, or questioning (LGBTQ). The
Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) launched the Welcoming Congregation Program in the
1980s and 90s to help congregations learn how to undo homophobia and later transphobia in
their hearts and minds, congregations, and communities. Today, most Unitarian Universalist
congregations are recognized as Welcoming Congregations.
